Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area

Overview

Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area offers a tranquil escape into the heart of Indiana’s diverse natural landscapes. Spanning nearly 10,000 acres, this state-managed property is a cornerstone for conservation and outdoor recreation in Newton County. Centered around the expansive J.C. Murphey Lake, the area provides a rustic setting where the focus remains on the preservation of local ecosystems and the quiet enjoyment of the great outdoors. It is a destination that favors a simple, immersive camping experience over modern resort luxuries, making it a true hidden gem for those who love the rustic side of life.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Morocco, IN, the park is defined by its mosaic of marshes, wetlands, and oak barrens. The geography is relatively flat, offering expansive views of the Indiana sky and shimmering waters. The surrounding area is rural and quiet, characterized by agricultural fields and natural preserves. Its position in northwestern Indiana makes it an accessible retreat for those traveling from nearby urban centers who are seeking a profound disconnect from the noise of city life while remaining within a reasonable drive of local conveniences.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping facilities at Willow Slough are catered toward self-sufficient RVers who appreciate a Class B camping experience. The park features electric hookups for many of its sites, though campers should be prepared for vault toilets rather than full bathhouses. Essential features that make your stay comfortable include:

  • Large, level sites with electric hookups available
  • Dedicated fire rings and picnic tables for every camper
  • A central water-filling station for easy access
  • On-site boat ramp and seasonal rentals near the headquarters

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts primarily visit for the exceptional fishing and hunting opportunities that the property provides year-round. J.C. Murphey Lake is well-known for producing quality panfish, bass, and northern pike. Beyond the water, the property offers miles of trails for hiking and unmatched bird watching, especially during migration seasons when waterfowl frequent the marshes. For a change of pace, the nearby Kankakee Sands offers a chance to see a restored prairie landscape and a resident bison herd roaming the plains.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for sportsmen and nature photographers who prioritize proximity to wildlife over commercial amenities. If you prefer a quiet evening by a campfire surrounded by the sounds of the marsh rather than a swimming pool or clubhouse, you will feel right at home here. It is best suited for adventurous RVers with smaller to mid-sized rigs who enjoy a primitive, authentic connection to the Indiana wilderness and a slower pace of travel.

So much habitat diversity, it's unbelievable! I've also been amazed at the variety of birds including something I haven't seen or heard in years- pheasants! I appreciate the hard work and dedication the DNR and other wildlife divisions have put into this place.

This was my favorite fishing lake especially for top water bass fishing. This place had giant bass. They decided to drain the lake several years ago to clean it up. And as you see in the videos it needs at least 2 more feet of water, Not only that but the vegetation is worst than before. It’s hard to maneuver around with a trolling motor especially at the boat dock. For those who love water fowl hunting I feel sorry for you since the season is around the corner. Please clean this lake since this is the only really good lake we have for fishing in Northwest Indiana!

Wish they had electricity for camping. We love fishing there. We were there today 6/18/24 still not ready for fishing.09/16/24 still very low water. Had a great day out there today. Went fishing in between the rain and caught a small bass UPDATE: Tried to fish there today from land. Very difficult because of all the vegetation growth in the water.

nice area that also great for hunting but BE AWARE area is heavily tick infested!!! I go for hikes with my dogs when no animals are in season and my dogs and myself have ticks on us every single time. I cant remember a time I have not had a tick on me when I was here.
