Overview

Wilson State Park offers a classic Michigan lakeside experience within the heart of Harrison. Established on the historic site of a former sawmill, this 36-acre park sits directly on the wooded shores of Budd Lake. It provides a unique mix of timbered charm and convenient town access, making it a popular staple for travelers exploring the scenic middle of the state. Visitors often appreciate the towering trees that provide shade throughout the campground area.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Clare County, the park is surrounded by the vast natural beauty of northern Lower Michigan. It is situated within the city limits of Harrison, famously known as the "City of 20 Lakes." The campground is uniquely positioned between the tranquil shores of Budd Lake and the local community, offering a perfect blend of secluded forest vibes and proximity to local supplies. It is a rare destination where you can enjoy a sunrise over the water and walk to nearby shops.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 160 modern campsites that accommodate various RV sizes with 20 and 30-amp electrical service available. Guests can enjoy access to a sandy swimming beach and a dedicated fishing pier perfect for catching panfish, walleye, or bass. For convenience, the grounds include modern restrooms with showers, a playground for children, and a paved boat launch that allows for easy lake exploration for all types of watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the extensive ORV trail systems located just a short drive from the park entrance, including the popular Leota and Denton Creek trails. Harrison serves as a gateway to the Gladwin State Forest, where hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing are year-round activities. Budd Lake itself is a hub for boating and fishing, while the surrounding Clare County area offers several highly-rated golf courses and winter snowmobiling trails.

This is a very well-kept state park. Would be a great park for a family reunion or group camp trip. Park in RIGHT in Harrison, on the corner of two main roads. Significant road noise. If you're looking for 'quiet, in the woods' park... This is not for you. But if you're looking for somewhere close to town...this is great.

Nice campground. Very clean. Always someone driving around from the park checking on things. I will say our campsite WAS NOT level. The website where it described the site, it said it was level. Most other sites looked pretty well level. Just beware campsite 43 has a hill. Very much enjoyed my stay with my husband and dog!

We only spent one night but probably should have stayed more. Wilson has been a state park since the 1920’s. It had one of the best beaches we’ve found at the state parks. We were told the fishing was good.

The positioning and layout of the park is reminiscent of myrtle beach, but scaled down. Positioned between a city and a body of water. There are obvious differences, but the sibling similarities are strong. The negatives: You can see the main road through town from all or most of the camping spots. The electric service is 30 amps max, and the power access, is awkward for many of the sites requiring upto 50 feet of extension cord. The positives: Mature trees, lawn or well shaded dirt. Sites are mostly level and parking in the sites is not restricted. The lake is nice and the water is clear. The staff are friendly and helpful. We are here mid week in June and it is busier than I was expecting. The park does have loaner extension cords (30 amp), which is very cool. Probably not enough for everyone on a weekend, but I was able to use one mid week. The sites are good sized, but without much division between them. The bathrooms are newer and well kept. For an older park positioned inside a city, it is nice.

Kids love this beach, not only can they go swimming but not to far is a dock to go fishing! It's peaceful, quiet little beach and our favorite here so far. ❤️☺️
