Woodford

Overview

Woodford State Park offers a high-elevation camping experience centered around the pristine waters of Adams Reservoir. Located deep within the Green Mountains, this park provides a secluded escape into a dense forest of spruce, fir, and birch trees. As one of the highest elevation campgrounds in Vermont, it offers a distinct mountain climate that remains cool and refreshing throughout the summer months. This state park is celebrated for its quiet, natural atmosphere, providing a sanctuary for those looking to immerse themselves in the Vermont wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the town of Woodford, which holds the distinction of being the highest village in Vermont. It is conveniently located along the scenic Molly Stark Trail (Route 9), making it accessible while still feeling incredibly remote. The landscape is dominated by the rugged terrain of the Green Mountain National Forest, which surrounds the park on all sides. This location ensures that campers are treated to vibrant displays of wildflowers in the spring and world-renowned autumn foliage during the later months of the season.

Amenities & Park Features

While this park focuses on a rustic experience, it provides essential facilities for a comfortable stay. The campground features over 100 sites, though it is important to note there are no hookups available for RVs. Facilities include clean restrooms with hot showers and a coin-operated laundry area. For recreation, visitors can enjoy a small swimming beach and a boat launch. The park offers rentals for canoes, kayaks, and rowboats, allowing guests to explore the reservoir without needing to haul their own watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with the 2.7-mile Woodford Lake Trail offering a scenic loop around the reservoir for hikers of all skill levels. Just a short drive west leads to the historic town of Bennington, where travelers can visit the Bennington Battle Monument or local museums. To the east, the charming village of Wilmington offers boutique shopping and dining. Additionally, the park’s proximity to the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail makes it an excellent base camp for more ambitious hikers exploring the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

Woodford is the ideal destination for self-contained RVers and dry campers who value solitude and scenery over resort-style amenities. It is a favorite for paddling enthusiasts and birdwatchers who appreciate the tranquil, motor-free waters of the reservoir. Families looking for a traditional camping experience with campfire stories and stargazing will find the park perfectly suited to their needs. If you prefer a quiet, wooded setting where the primary soundtrack is the wind through the trees, this high-mountain retreat is a perfect fit.

Great spot to camp for a fall trip. Reservoir hiking trail is easy but very worthwhile for the fall foliage. Love that they have kayak and canoe rentals to go on the water. Well maintained campsites, bathrooms and showers.

My husband and I stayed two nights at Woodford State park. We hiked the trails and enjoyed our lakeside camp site. We heard the loon and owls which we enjoyed. We found lots of wood around our campsite and you can also buy wood from the staff. Great stay. Vermont state parks are worth the drive.

We visited Woodford Lake for the first time to go kayaking and had a great experience. After maneuvering around the rocks walking to the launch area, we made it to the water, which was calm and peaceful. The lake is a great size for kayaking—perfect for spending an hour or two exploring. One of the highlights was seeing and hearing the loons, which added to the serene atmosphere. There isn’t a designated beach area, which would be a nice addition—especially for swimmers who currently have to share the space with people launching kayaks and other watercraft. After kayaking, we sat along the shore, grilled some food, and took in the natural beauty. All in all, it was a relaxing and enjoyable visit.

Sites that have access to the water is always a huge plus in my book! Well cared for campground with friendly staff. Campers have their own private beach which is also really awesome. It was a busy campground especially for a Wednesday night. Love to see it! Everyone was respecting quiet hours though.

A really nice state park with a pond(or lake?). The bathroom could be better, but we’re camping so what did I expect. My friends and I got three lean-tos. The people that managed this campground are very friendly and receptive. There’s a nice loop trail to go hiking that wraps around the pond/lake. We saw Smokey the Bear while we were here too! Great times!
