Yellow Banks (Polk County Park)

Overview

Yellow Banks Park is a premier destination within the Polk County Conservation system, offering a compelling mix of natural beauty and deep historical significance. Spanning more than 500 acres of diverse terrain, the park is most famous for the massive sandstone bluffs that provide its name and tower over the Des Moines River. Travelers visiting this area will find a quiet, well-maintained environment that successfully balances modern convenience with the rugged, authentic charm of the Iowa wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Conveniently situated in Pleasant Hill, just a short drive southeast of the Des Moines metro area, the park provides a secluded escape without sacrificing quick access to city amenities. The surrounding landscape is defined by heavily timbered hills and sweeping views of the river valley below. Its unique position on a high bluff provides a cooling breeze and a sense of elevation, making it a peaceful retreat for those who want to immerse themselves in the lush greenery and wildlife of central Iowa.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping area provides spacious sites equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups, catering to a variety of RV sizes. While the park maintains a rustic feel with mature oak trees providing ample shade, it offers modern comforts including updated restrooms, shower facilities, and a convenient dump station. Active visitors can explore the extensive woodland hiking trails or spend an afternoon at the fishing pond, while families will appreciate the large playground and open ball fields.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park itself is a sanctuary, it serves as an excellent base for exploring local highlights like the Iowa State Capitol and the bustling East Village. Outdoor enthusiasts often utilize the park’s boat ramp for river excursions or venture to nearby Adventureland Park for a day of thrills. Within the park, the ancient Native American burial mounds offer a reflective experience, connecting visitors to the long human history of the Des Moines River valley.

Who This Park Is Best For

Yellow Banks Park is an ideal choice for nature-focused RV travelers and families who prioritize scenic beauty over the commercial flash of luxury resorts. It is particularly well-suited for birdwatchers, hikers, and those who enjoy a quiet evening by a campfire under a thick canopy of trees. Spent the weekend and it was lovely. Kids had a great time roasting marshmallows, fishing and exploring. People are friendly and our pup was able to be part of the adventure.only down side were the mosquitoes, they are really really bad this year . We had attempted to hike the trails but had to turn back half mile in because they were swarming us so bad. Bring lots of repellent.

Quiet trail that I attempted. Lots of bees and flies on the trail. Got stung by a bee walking so couldn’t complete it. Looks like a great trail though

It’s beautiful here. Besides the drunks that don’t pay, and put their tent up in the middle of the trail and selfishly block anyone else from going up or out after camping in the back packing camping area. We were blocked in completely from leaving. The smell of alcohol almost knocked us out when we went around the tent (around in the woods with the thorns mind you) he also peed all over the outside of our car on the side I put my 5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IN too.

Hey everyone, be like the person that jst comes in the middle of the night and set up a tent right in the middle of the trail. This trail leads up to the hike in camp sites, so let me tell how great that wasn't to unpack and get outta there
