Yellowwood State Forest

Overview

Yellowwood State Forest offers a serene escape into the rolling hills of southern Indiana. Established in 1940, this 23,326-acre forest provides a deeply rustic camping experience centered around the tranquil 133-acre Yellowwood Lake. Unlike developed commercial parks, this is a destination for those seeking solitude and a genuine connection with nature. It is characterized by dense hardwood canopies and a quiet atmosphere that is perfect for traditional woodland camping and disconnecting from the digital world.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of Nashville, Indiana, the forest is nestled in the heart of Brown County. The terrain is defined by steep ridges and deep ravines, offering a lush backdrop that changes dramatically with the seasons. Access roads lead visitors through winding, scenic paths, making the journey part of the destination. The park serves as a vital gateway to the broader Brown County wilderness area, providing a buffer between the busy tourist corridors and the quiet, undisturbed interior of the forest.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Yellowwood is focused on primitive-style camping, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available at individual sites. Facilities are basic but well-maintained, including vault toilets and seasonal drinking water stations located throughout the camping loops. Each site features a fire ring and a picnic table for guest use. For those traveling with animals, a dedicated horse camp provides specific amenities like hitching rails and specialized trailer access for equestrian visitors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy fishing and rowboat rentals on Yellowwood Lake, where only electric trolling motors are permitted to keep the waters calm. Hikers will find miles of rugged trails, including the loop around the lake and the historic Ten O'Clock Line Trail which connects to nearby state parks. For a change of pace, the nearby town of Nashville offers artisan galleries and local dining, while the T.C. Steele State Historic Site provides a look at the region's artistic history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This forest is ideal for self-contained RV travelers and van lifers who prefer peace and quiet over high-density resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for nature photographers, birdwatchers, and backpackers who appreciate a secluded woodland setting. Because the sites are primitive and forest roads can be narrow, it is best suited for smaller campers or those comfortable with dry camping. If you value dark skies and the sounds of the forest, this is a premier Indiana destination.

Some might say this is better than Brown County, and I agree! A beautiful lake and perfect for spotting fall colors. Plus, an extensive system of trails.

Yellowwood is one of my most favorite places to visit. It is far enough away from the hustle and bustle that you can enjoy a true nature experience. Serenity is easy to find here.

Went camping with my girlfriend at Yellowwood State Forest Park and it was amazing! The park is beautiful and the campgrounds are very nice, quiet and serene. We pitched our tent and had a nice BBQ and campfire. Our stay was a great deal of fun and we'll be back soon!

Wonderful place to visit! The forest offers a variety of trails—from the quick 0.5-mile High King climb to moderate loops like the 4.5-mile lake circuit and the 4-mile Scarce O’ Fat Trail, plus short interpretive walks and even the long Tecumseh Trail for those seeking more of a challenge. A truly rewarding spot for hikers—highly recommend!

Trees as far as you can see. A real nice sized lake. You can boat and fish and watch nature and camping. There is a real nice shelter house as well. Hunting is allowed on property. A license is required for hunting and fishing. There are several miles of trails. One of the trails is an historic one.
