Yosemite/Hodgdon Meadow Campground, Groveland, CA

This place was miserable!  Worst campground we have ever been in.  Packed!  Tents wall to wall.  We stayed next to the camp host, thinking they would monitor the chaos around us.  Nope.  Besides partying until 3:00 and nothing done, we were treated to scared  idiots bringing LED floodlights to illuminate their camp all night.   If you want to recreate the city experience in the forest, stay home.   I wouldn’t complain if it was one group, but it was a ton Of them!  Camp hosts, do your job!!  Good god!  Seriously!  Folks, do yourself a favor and stay outside the park and drive in each day.

Extremely disappointing. These campsites are all cramped with on top of another without any delineation of where one site ends and another begins. This causes friction between neighboring sites about where people are putting their tents and noise issues.

Then there are the hosts. At first, they seem very nice. But I and some friends had adjoining sites and the camp host had an issue about us moving our picnic table 20 feet so that they were together and all the adults and kids could eat together. Of course, they waited until we’re gone for the day, entered our site, moved our picnic tables, and left us a written warning without their name on it.

The camp hosts rotate daily and stay in an RV. Our mistake was getting the site right across the driveway from them. Because they rotated daily, each one came over and repeated the same bear lecture twice a day for four days.

And many of their bear precautions were excessive and absurdly pedantic. We had two sites next to each other with a total of 12 people constantly around, and we were told at least once a day that we literally had to be “within arms length of our trashcan at all times.” Mind you, our site was in the middle of this campsite, surrounded by over 100 other campsites, and they think we need to spend our entire day “within arm’s length” of our trash cans all day? Because why? A bear is going to sprint from the woods all the way across dozens of sites to get to us in the middle and attack our trashcan? And what would I am I supposed to do with that arm’s length trash can if a bear showed up? Grab it and away with it?

I get that you have to put many things in the bear box. But if you didn’t, the hosts harassed you. Inside my zippered screened-in tent, I left a can of insect repellent. And not some flavored lotion-y stuff, but real insect repellent. Some anonymous host came into the screened in, zippered porch of my tent and removed it and put it in a bear box. And left me a written warning.

Then our fire pit is stuck in the ground literally 3 feet away from two trees. A horrible safety risk, so I put out my own fire pit 8 feet away, and got a written warning for that too.

Someone needs to let these camp hosts know, that they are there to serve the guests WHEN WE CHOOSE TO COME TO THEM. We don’t need them coming over twice a day to harass us with the same bear lecture, bother our peaceful enjoyment, or to trespass in our tents.

Then there is the lack of facilities. They had two bathrooms for over 100 campsites. And for the men, they had one urinal and one stall in each bathroom. And one of those urinals was clogged up. And the electrical outlet in the bathroom doesn’t work. And be prepared that there is no other electricity except for two hours in the middle of the day (when most are gone for the day) and two hours at night, at one location on the host’s site. How hard is it to put in some more outlets that work?

And this camp site is 45 minutes from Yosemite Valley. Never again would I stay there.

We stayed at Hodgdon October 16-19, 2025. It was absolutely perfect. It was during the shutdown, but we still had a couple rangers. We stayed in site 30 with 2 tents. Very flat and awesome! It's a hike in, but it's literally like 50 feet from the car. Easy to transport our stuff. It was quiet for the most part, but one night at 2am some people went to their car and basically had no courtesy and just slammed the door, being in the forest it echoes. It's a bit of a drive from Yosemite Valley but it wasn't crowded at all, and the weather was great.

This is definitely the campsite you get when everything else in Yosemite gets snapped up immediately. It's not super close to the park, but not in a bad position for getting to the valley or hetch hetchy. Campsites vary greatly - some are more private and spacious and some (like the one we got #35) are very small and so close to neighbors you constantly feel like you're in their space. Many sites are also pretty sloped. That said, rangers were great and friendly and did frequent bear checks, trash was regularly emptied, and bathrooms were clean.

RV sites are basic and sloped.  You will need leveling blocks and lit toilets are your only amenity.  But, it is very nice to camp inside the park.

About 45 minutes from the valley, but couldn't be easier to find. It's after you enter the park about 2 minute drive. Never hear the cars along the main road though and got in and out with zero problems. Stayed in 001, which felt secluded from the rest of the camp but still very much in it. Bathrooms were a small walk but nothing terrible. Overall me and my wife enjoyed the stay.

Spent 3 nights at this campground near the entrance of Yosemite National Park. It’s about a 45-minute drive to Yosemite Valley. We stayed at campsite #1, which was conveniently located near the entrance, but a bit far from the restrooms. There is no reception on this campground.

There are no showers on-site, so we had to drive to Curry Village to take a shower. The campground only has flushing toilets, which is fine, but they weren’t very clean and there was no soap available. They also have potable water.

Some campsites are also on a slope, which isn’t ideal for tent camping. During our visit, there was a lot of loose dirt, so our feet and legs were constantly dusty.

Each site has a bear box, which is a plus for safety. Overall, it’s a decent location close to the park, but restroom maintenance and facilities could definitely be improved.

Great campsite above Yosemite Valley. It takes about 40-60min to drive down to Yosemite Valley is can be both good and bad: calmer and further away from crowds but requires more driving.

My specific campsite was on an incline so it was hard to find a flat patch of ground to pitch my tent but other than that the campsite was great. Every campsite had its own table, fire pit, and bear locker and there’s toilets with running water nearby.

We enjoyed our stay at this campsite, however we had to cut our trip short since the terrain was on a slope. We had originally planned on having 2 tents set up. One on the ground and one on my pickup truck bed for the kids. Unfortunately the staff did not allow me to put up the tent on my pickup truck which was a real bummer and really made the camping more inconvenient. The plus side was the flushable restrooms and running water.

Recently visited and had an amazing experience! The campground is right as you enter Yosemite National Park and super easy to locate, plus it's only about a 30 minute drive from Yosemite Valley.

The camp hosts were absolutely amazing, both welcoming and super knowledgable while we were there June 20-23. There is no phone service, but that's what we hope for and expect while camping. It was the perfect way to unplug. We had a hike in campsite and we will 100% be doing that again, not a super far hike and you get to be a little bit further away from other camp sites.

Absolutely love this place and was really sad to leave! We will definitely be back and will recommend to others.

It is yosemite! I love Yosemite. I go to yosmite all the time. This is a bare bones kinda camp site. There is no water at the individual sites. Vault toilets at the group site make for some interesting experiences. You come here for the location and the camping experience. I was able to get cell reception for a call on Verizon at the top of the hill where you checked in. The camp hosts/ Rangers did a good job patrolling, making sure fires were out. Food was put away, and dogs were on leashes.

Spent 3 nights here, and enjoyed our time overall. Rangers were knowledgeable and kind. Restrooms are flush toilets only, but  good for a campsite. Nearest showers are in Curry Village- easy to pay and shower at the end of your day in the valley. It’s about a 30-40 min drive from the campsite to Yosemite Valley. Tent site came with a fire ring and picnic table. There was a potable water source provided for dish washing - bring your own bucket.
Deducted 1 star for loud campers that went until 1-2am. I wish the host would have been more strict with quiet hour rules.

A little far from the main attractions, but you're right next to the entrance of Yosemite which is convenient.

It was great to find a campground with bathrooms and running water that had availability.

Just don't expect much privacy here. They pack lots of campsites into a small area and it's always near 100% occupancy.

This campground has some terrible camp sites. It does have some beautiful areas around and Hetch Hetchy is close by car, but my campsite was at a slope that I didn’t enjoyed my stay.

Great spacious campsite. just the people who camped on the campsite next to us, kept on telling us to be quiet when we were trying to sing around the bonfire

We have been going to Yosemite for 37 years.  When the kids were young the Valley was the place to go because there is much to do.  As years went on, the Valley got too congested (even off season).   We switched to Hodgdon Meadow and love the peace and quiet.  If you need to go to the Valley for a shower or just to view the beautiful falls or hiking.... 25 miles is not that far to go and the drive is beautiful.

This is a nice, basic NPS campground, but it isn’t where Google Maps shows it. It’s just inside the park’s west entrance.
