Joshua Tree/Jumbo Rocks

They have ruined the camping experience. Well done! No rock climbing at the campsite are you crazy? That was my attraction for camping at Jumbo rocks. For people who like to climb. Now you gotta go online and pick out a site that is never available and never actually gets used that night. What a joke. This used to be my favorite area to camp. Why is everything going backwards? I’ve been going there for 30+ years, When it used to be $7 dollars.

Lots of fun campsites nestled among the jumbo rocks. Campsites vary significantly in size and privacy. Some sites are tent camping only with vehicle parking and a short ~30ft walk in. Is tend to be more cramped with close neighbors. The 1.7 mi Skull Rock Loop gives a good overview of the area. Good for all ages!

Must reserve space online. It can be really freezing at night during the winter so bundle up with some gloves, coat, layers of clothing and more socks. There was no water. Many no shows at the campsite so it was tranquil and quiet. It can be difficult to start a fire because it gets windy. Rangers were checking for reservations. Bathrooms were vault toilets with toilet paper. It was not that clean. People seem to hover and miss the toilet so watch where you step in the bathroom. There was a dumpster and recycle bin to dump trash.

I've stayed here quite a few times. Large enough campground but it definitely started booking up quickly over the last couple of years. The only "bad" thing is that for such a large campground the available bathrooms are quite limited. Not a big deal if you're used to camping, but may deter some.

Jumbo Rocks is one of the best campgrounds there is inside the park. It's central location makes it perfect to explore. I suggest to have at least two days to explore. Many campsites to chose from. The further one from the entrance are the best and you get more privacy.

Jumbo Rocks is an amazing campground in Joshua Tree National Park. We reserved campsite # 86, December 16 - 19. The campground is centrally located in the NP and the trailhead to Skull Rock nature trail starts by site # 93. The trails to Face Rock and Split Rock are right across Park Blvd. Site #86 has beautiful jumbo rocks right beside the site. We climbed them to enjoy views of the campground and sunsets. Loved the campground and highly recommend it.

Amazing campground, centrally located, clean bathrooms, no running water. Nearby however were amazing opportunities to hike/boulder the Jumbo Rocks Nature Trail runs right through it, and connects to Skull Rock. Each camp site has it's own BBQ pit and fire ring, we were in a very windy site so the fire was a little challenging to keep going. I would camp again!
